Mirror

Our homes are mirrors ourselves

The project is based on Joseph Cornell whose field is assemblage, experimental film and sculpture.  He uses objects and memorabilia to build up his designs.  I have also been inspired by the work of Tom Mosely who works with Assemblage and geometric shapes.

I will also be using one of Frida Kahlo painting’s known as Self Portrait with Cropped Hair (1940) as a reference for my work.
Kahlo painted the self-portrait with cropped hair shortly after she divorced her unfaithful husband Diego Rivera.  She often painted self-portraits of herself as a traditional Mexican woman wearing traditional clothes with long flowing hair but in this painting she painted herself wearing a man’s suit with short hair in renunciation of Rivera with her cut hair all over the floor around her.

In my home my special place is my walk in wardrobe.  I aim to reconstruct this into the form of a 3D box.  It’s a place where I keep my favourite things including my grandmother’s jewellery, my father’s medals and some other things that remind me of Colombia.

I recreated the room within a 3D Box.  In the centre of the box will be a 3D figure of me sitting on a chair holding a mirror.   On the floor instead of hair will be some broken glass from the mirror to represent the successes and failures that we all go through in life that define me.  In that room I feel close to my father and grandmother.

In order to make the 3D picture of myself I hired the university’s photo studio and dressed up like Frida Kahlo for a photo-shoot.   I set up the shoot and got a friend to take the photos.   I created the other objects out of cardboard and placed them in the box.  There are three windows in the box and as you move around the box you can see the 3D image of me through each of the windows.

Dimensions:
Box 12 cm. x 9 cm.

What is Graphic Design?

Definition

The Dictionary defines graphic design as “ the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisments, magazines or books”.
Graphic is defined as “relating to visual art drawing, engraving or lettering.  Giving a vivid picture with explicit detail.  In computing it related to denoting a visual image such as charts or diagrams.
My definition of Graphic Design is like having a formula.
It begins with having an idea,  choosing which tools you are going to use to create that idea.  The result is the materialisation of that idea.  That embraces the aesthetics of other art genres such as music, illustration and electronic media.
These devices gather to share in the creation and the art of the realization of an idea.

Everything comes from an idea

My project is called “Everything comes from an Idea”.  I used the word idea and designed a font  Photoshop using the primary printing colours CMYK.  In inkjet colour printing, black is the key component and it serves to cover unwanted tints in dark areas of the printed image.
I created an image and applied the CMYK colours to represent the main colours used in the Graphic Design printing process. In Graphic Design everything comes from CYMK and in my definition of Graphic Design everything comes from an Idea.
My project represents what I believe to exist at the root of Graphic Design.  I have also created a representation of this design using photography as it is an important tool used in Graphic Design.

Desaster Wating to Happen

  Beesaster

My first idea was going to relate to my poor sense of direction.  I found  it a little hard to demonstrate this through visual means and so I focussed my efforts on a different Idea.
I decided to change the theme of my disaster project to one that could well become a reality in the near future.  What would happen to the world if all the Bees died out?  We would have a “Beesaster” on our hands.
For the first time I started to work on the idea with the visual application Photoshop.  I decided to do my sketches on the application itself.
Because the front cover must be made up of typography only I decided to create my own font related to Bees.  The font takes on the style of a honeycomb and is made up of hexagonal shaped letters.
I decided to use the play on words and call it Beesaster.
My booklet tells a story of what would happen if there were no Bee’s.  It contains lots of facts that I have found.
If we were ever to find that Honey Bee’s had died out we would be faced with a worldwide food shortage.  Honey Bee’s are the main pollinators of fruit, nut and vegetable crops.   The only crops that bee’s do not pollinate are grains.
There are 7000 known species of Bee’s in the world and if they disappeared the knock on effects to local eco systems worldwide  would be devastating.  Many other plants and species rely on Bee’s for pollination or as part of the food chain.  With the Bee’s gone these eco systems would decline and will die out themselves.
The Honey Bee are a good barometer for all other bee populations so if we lose them we will soon lose the others.
Can you imagine a world without fruit?  Without nuts?  Or without vegetables?  Fresh goods will one day become more valuable than gold and eventually without proper nutrition it could easily spell the end for us as well.

The Box

The Box

I have designed an A3 size wooden display box which I have made out of MDF wood.  I enjoy working with wood.  This box will be used to keep my research sketch books and my design project print outs.
I designed the box to my own specifications and then went to a DIY shop in order to get the materials to make it.
I used 6mm MDF as I wanted it to be as lightweight as possible.  The MDF was cut to size and then I assembled it myself using the following tools:
A cordless drill and 2mm Bit.
An electric screwdriver.
12 x 1 inch screws.
A set of hinges.
A handle fitting.
